about

I first heard this first hornpipe played by the late great Tony Howley, a Sligo flute and
sax player based in Manchester for many years. A man of great sartorial elegance and
a beautiful Sligo style of playing. When I was young he played it down the phone to
me and I remember thinking how on earth would I ever be able to play like that.
Here’s my attempt. The second tune is a hornpipe sharing the same name as
the town I grew up in. I’ve grown to love English folk music and I wanted to find
something from my home-town to play in that style with Bryony and Will. I found this
on line in the 19th Century Kohler’s Repository of Dance Music collection housed in
the National Library of Scotland. I can’t be certain that it’s named after Stockport in the north west of England, but as there is no Stockport in Scotland, I’d like to think it is.
