A few years ago, my pal Lorna Fulton (Lathe Revival) sent me a CD of an Asturian Group called ‘Tejedor’. I was intrigued. A couple of years later I went to the wedding of my pals, Zach and Paula, in Asturias. As I wandered around the streets of Arriondas, I followed the sound of bagpipes and found a bar, Tasca y Maya, ran by Bea and Fran Wagner. Some of the musicians I met invited me back for a session that night. The bar was full of music. We played till the wee hours and I was hooked on Asturian folk music. I’ve spent the last 4 years back and forward to Asturias researching the folk scenes there for my PhD at The University of Sheffield. I try to evoke some of the sounds of the Asturian ‘revival’ groups of the 1980’s and 1990’s. I was first guided through the history of these groups during a memorable day of
research spent in the company of writer and singer Ismael María González Arias. Throughout my time in Asturias I have been met with generosity of spirit. It is truly a wondrous place. The first tune in this set is a muñeira written by J.M. Tejedor. The second tune I learned from the playing of Llan de Cubel. Their current fiddle player Simon Bradley features on this track. Uviéu is the Asturian name for the town of Oviedo. A pasucáis is a dance, (pasacalle in Castilian or ‘street song’ in English).
